NEW PUBLICATION: THE SPACE OF WORDS

Extending the exhibition The Space of Words presented at Mudam in 2009, this publication is articulated around the practice of eleven artists from different generations (Manon de Boer, Marcel Broodthaers, Aurélien Froment, Ryan Gander, Raymond Hains, Harald Klingelhöller, Dominique Petitgand, Edward Ruscha, Frances Stark, Josef Strau et Tris Vonna- Michell), who approach the relationships between language and space from the angle of different types of gaps: erasure, alteration, the slippage or exploding of meaning, illogism, the transposition of the medium of the text to the exhibition space etc. Various personal relationships with language are displayed behind these gestures and the publication aims to highlight the singularity of these approaches, notably through a series of interviews, most of them previously unpublished, with the artists in the exhibition. The publication also includes an introduction text by Christophe Gallois and an extensive essay by Jean-Philippe Antoine, in which certain practices presented in the exhibition and some other artistic and literary moments – such as the “garnering of words” practised by the protagonist of James Joyce’s Stephen Hero and Roland Barthes’s notion of écrivain-écrivant – are apprehended from the point of view of a “spectacle of words”. Contrasting with these textual readings of the exhibition, another reading, this time a visual one, takes the form of a series of exhibition views by Aurélien Mole. The last part, conceived as an extension of the exhibition, brings together three contributions by artists Aurélien Froment, Ryan Gander and Josef Strau.
