KIMSOOJA
A Mirror Woman
In her work of art, A Mirror Woman (2002), a corridor with infinite perspectives thanks to a play of mirrors, the Korean artist, Kimsooja (1957), known for her performances and her installations, goes beyond the purely decorative nature of coloured cloth typical of her country of birth. The Ybulbo, a bed cover of multiple uses in everyday Korean life, in fact serves just as well for rest as for love and even death. It is used as much to bundle up clothes or books for travel as it is as a shroud for the final journey. A recurring element in the artistic work of Kimsooja for a few years, the Ybulbo also symbolises femininity and the nomadic dimension, a major element in the life of the artist herself. The sensuality and lightness which radiate from it encourages the viewer to take a slow stroll within the invested space.
