LES LANCEURS D'ALERTE

CARTE BLANCHE FOR SYLVIE BLOCHER
Share

As part of her solo exhibition S’inventer autrement, Mudam Luxembourg is giving carte blanche to artist Sylvie Blocher to mark the middle of her exhibition period. After filling the Large Hall of the museum during the month of November with a participatory and protean work concerning the invention of another world, the artist wishes to share with Mudam’s public the artworks and words of artists, writers and theorists whose work and commitment she appreciates.

“Les lanceurs d'alerte” (The Whistle-blowers) form the underlying basis of this carte blanche. A whistleblower is an individual who publicly reveals information about illegal activity, sometimes putting his or her life at risk. But " whistleblowing" also and more generally involves thinking critically about the world around us. It is also about highlighting what is unmentioned or unknown.

Located somewhere between practice and theory, the critical views of the participants invited by Sylvie Blocher will be expressed through poetry, documentary film, performance and writing.

The carte blanche will open with Katia Bouchoueva, a poet and Franco-Russian ‘‘slammer’’ whose collection of poems, Tes oursons sont heureux, will be published by Color Gang later this year. This will be followed by the documentary film Enterrar y callar (Bury Them and Keep Quiet) directed by the young artist Anna López Luna, about the organized theft of newborns from Spanish maternity wards between 1960 and 1990 and which refers to the impunity that persists in contemporary societies. The evening will conclude with a discussion between Katia Bouchoueva, Anna López Luna and Sylvie Blocher.

The second day will begin with performances by the young artist Olivier Pierre Jozef Cyganek whose artistic work questions the way artists present themselves to the public, between conventions and interactions.

The philosopher and sociologist Geoffroy de Lagasnerie will then present his book L’Art de la révolte. Snowden, Assange, Manning (published by Fayard in January 2015). For Geoffroy de Lagasnerie, whistle-blowers "are exemplary characters who are reinventing the art of rebellion. (...) They lead us to question the function of democratic space and the concepts of citizenship, the State, belonging, speaking out, public space and collectivity, and invite us to reformulate the language of critical philosophy."

This will be followed by a discussion between the philosophers and writers Didier Eribon (Retour à Reims, published by Fayard) and Edouard Louis (En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule, published by Seuil). The discussion led by Geoffroy de Lagasnerie and Sylvie Blocher will focus on the notions of returning and fleeing. Starting from a self-critical position, confronted with social and gender pressures, two choices in life seem to be in question: return or flee. What does it all mean?

The carte blanche will end with a performance by French/Japanese artist Tsuneko Taniuchi, who refers to artistic performance as a “micro-event to demonstrate the participatory anchor of this practice with the public in a space, a time and a given place that questions the boundaries between art and reality.” It will question her foreign-artist status and will test her physical resilience: psychological confrontation, personal confession and exploration of intimate areas. At Mudam Tsuneko Taniuchi will reinvent herself via Fresh Acconci (1995), a video in which Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy carry out remakes of performances by Vito Acconci which they adapt to the aesthetic peculiar to the 1990s and soft-porn.
